El Zonte, El Salvador: The Complete Guide
There are places you visit, and there are places that quietly change the pace of your life while you are there.
El Zonte is the latter.
Set along El Salvador’s Pacific coast at kilometer 53 of the coastal highway, El Zonte is a small beach community known for its surf, black-sand beaches, dramatic coastline, and relaxed, bohemian atmosphere. It has grown considerably as a destination, but it has managed to keep much of the character that made people fall in love with it in the first place.
The days here tend to revolve around simple things: watching the ocean, surfing when the waves are right, finding a good breakfast, walking the beach, having a long lunch, cooling off in the pool, and deciding what sounds good for dinner. You can fill your time with adventure, or you can do almost nothing at all.
That balance is part of what makes El Zonte special.
If you are considering a trip, this guide will give you a better sense of what El Zonte is actually like, when to visit, what to do, where to eat, how the surfing works, and how to make the most of your time on the Salvadoran Pacific coast.
What is El Zonte like?
El Zonte is small enough that you can get to know it on foot, but there is enough going on that you will rarely feel bored.
The El Zonte River divides the beach area, with different surf sections and a collection of restaurants, accommodations, and small businesses spread around it. The official tourism board describes the area as retaining its bohemian beach-town character while offering an increasingly broad range of hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, surf rentals, and lessons.
The landscape is one of the first things you notice. The beaches are dark volcanic sand, the coastline is framed by rocky outcrops and cliffs, and the surrounding hills give the area a distinctly tropical feel. At the western end of the beach, there are even caves and rock formations that make the coastline particularly beautiful to explore.
But El Zonte is not a place where you need a packed itinerary.
In fact, one of the best ways to experience it is to leave some space in your schedule. Have breakfast, go for a swim, walk into town, stop somewhere for a cold drink, come back for a nap, and decide later what you want to do with the afternoon. The beach is always there.
That slower rhythm is one of the reasons people tend to stay longer than they originally planned.
How do you get to El Zonte?
El Zonte is on the coast about an hour or so from San Salvador’s main airport, depending on traffic.
For international visitors, the easiest option is usually to arrange transportation from the airport or have a private driver pick you up. Once you arrive in El Zonte, having someone who knows the area can make things considerably easier, particularly if you are traveling with a family or larger group and have luggage, surfboards, or groceries to think about.
At Villa Lety, airport pickup and drop-off, private drivers, grocery pickup, and concierge assistance are all available, which means you can arrive and start your vacation rather than immediately worrying about logistics.
The Beaches of El Zonte
The beaches around El Zonte are beautiful in a way that feels distinctly Pacific.
The dark volcanic sand contrasts with the green hills and deep blue ocean, while the cliffs and rocky sections of coastline give the area much more character than a long, uninterrupted strip of sand.
The river is also an important part of the landscape. It creates a natural divide between different sections of the beach and surf, and its presence gives El Zonte a slightly wild feeling even as restaurants and accommodations have grown around it.
One of our favorite things about the beach is how quiet it can feel early in the morning.
From September through April, the sunrises can be particularly beautiful. If the tide allows, walk the beach before most people are awake. The sky can begin almost completely black before slowly changing through deep red, orange, and pink. The air is still cool, the beach is often nearly empty, and for a little while it can feel as though you have the whole Pacific to yourself.
It is a wonderful time for a quiet walk, yoga, meditation, or simply sitting and watching the day begin.
Surfing in El Zonte
Surfing is at the heart of El Zonte.
The official tourism information identifies several different surf sections around the beach, including the main right-hand point break, a left near the river mouth, and a beach-break section. Conditions vary considerably depending on swell, tide, and your exact location, so the same beach can offer very different experiences from one day to the next.
For experienced surfers, the main point across the river is where much of the action happens. It can produce fast, powerful waves and is a break that deserves respect when the swell gets serious. El Zonte is not a place where you should underestimate the ocean simply because the beach looks relaxed.
For beginners, the experience is a little different.
The water directly in front of Villa Lety is generally more suitable for practicing in the whitewater, while better green-wave opportunities can be found a short walk farther along the beach. If you are learning, there is no reason to rush yourself into the deeper lineup. A couple of lessons, some time practicing your form on the sand, and plenty of repetition in smaller whitewater can make a huge difference.
The most important thing is to enjoy the process.
You will see surfers who are much better than you. That is part of being at a surf destination. But they are not your competition. You do not need to catch their waves, surf their section, or prove anything to anyone. Learn at your own pace, respect the ocean and the people around you, and let yourself have fun.
For beginners, October through April can be a particularly good period to plan a surf trip, although conditions are always dependent on the actual swell and weather.
If you are an experienced surfer looking for larger waves, the summer months can bring much bigger conditions. This is also the time of year when El Salvador attracts some of the world’s best surfers for major competitions and surf events.
And if you do not surf at all?
You can still enjoy El Zonte perfectly well.
There is something surprisingly satisfying about having breakfast with a view of the ocean and watching other people do all the hard work.
Where to eat in El Zonte
One of the best things about El Zonte is that you do not have to choose between a beautiful setting and good food.
There are plenty of places to eat around the beach, from casual local spots to more polished restaurants. We have a few favorites that we return to again and again.
La Covana
At the far end of the beach, La Covana is part of Puro Surf and is worth the walk simply for the setting. The restaurant sits beneath a huge palapa with views over the beach and surrounding hills.
There is a broad menu, including several ceviches. Our favorite is the octopus ceviche, although the dish that consistently surprises people is the mac and cheese. It is not necessarily what you would expect to order at a Pacific beach restaurant, but it is genuinely one of our favorites.
The walk there is part of the experience. You get to see a good stretch of El Zonte along the way, and the restaurant makes a great destination for a long lunch.
La Roka
La Roka has a completely different feel.
It is one of the more upscale dining experiences in El Zonte and has a distinctive interior that feels almost carved into the rock. It is also one of the few places in town where you can escape into air conditioning when the afternoon heat really sets in.
The menu is relatively small, the atmosphere is more refined, and there is a full bar. It is a good choice when you want dinner to feel like an occasion rather than simply another meal at the beach.
Snack Point
Across the river, Snack Point is a small, casual burger spot that is easy to miss if you are not looking for it.
The shrimp burger and beef burger (La Marinera) is excellent, but our favorite may actually be the taro smoothie. Taro is grown locally, and it is one of those ingredients that you may not expect to encounter in a beach-town smoothie but quickly understand why the locals love it.
It is simple, casual, and exactly the sort of local spot we like to find.
Olas Permanentes
For something closer to home, Olas Permanentes is an easy favorite.
It is right near Villa Lety and also has a great beachfront view. Their fruit smoothies—or “frozens”—are also excellent, especially if you like a little rum added in.
Their pizzas are another favorite, made from scratch and ideal for an easy dinner when you do not feel like going anywhere.
Nantal
Next to La Covana, Nantal is one of our favorite places for breakfast.
The Salmon Eggs Benedict is a standout and the Full Service breakfast is also a great choice if you want to complete the meal. It includes coffee, fresh house-made juice, and fruit along with the main breakfast.
It is the kind of place where you can easily sit longer than you intended.
Luz del Oceano
Luz del Oceano is another little gem.
It is a small restaurant with a wooden deck and a fantastic view of the main surf break. Breakfast sandwiches are inexpensive, and the setting gives you a front-row seat to watching experienced surfers work the waves.
Grab breakfast, find a seat outside, and watch the ocean for a while.
You may find yourself staying longer than planned.
Things to do in and around El Zonte
Surfing may be the main attraction, but it is far from the only thing to do.
Take an ATV into the mountains
If you want to see a completely different side of the area, local ATV tours head into the mountains and can include stops at rivers where you can cool off.
It is a fun way to get away from the beach for a few hours and see more of the landscape surrounding El Zonte.
Visit a coffee plantation
One of the more memorable experiences available from the area is visiting a local coffee plantation with Rivas, a local guide who can take you to his family’s plantation.
You can learn about different varieties of coffee, how the beans are processed, and what goes into producing something that most of us simply pour into a cup every morning.
It is the kind of experience that works for almost any age and gives you a much better understanding of the country beyond its beaches.
Hike to the Tamanique waterfalls
The Tamanique waterfalls are roughly 45 minutes from El Zonte and make a great day trip for anyone who wants a little adventure.
The hike takes you through the surrounding landscape before reaching the waterfalls and swimming areas. Depending on water conditions, not every waterfall may be accessible on every visit, so it is worth checking locally before setting out. The official tourism board also highlights the Tamanique waterfalls as one of the area’s nearby adventure attractions.
After a few hours of hiking and swimming, there is nothing quite like coming back to El Zonte and getting a massage.
Fortunately, that part is easy.
Take on Santa Ana Volcano
If you are looking for a bigger adventure, Santa Ana Volcano makes for a long but rewarding day.
The drive is roughly two hours each way, and the hike takes several hours, so this is one to start early. It is a challenging but achievable hike for many travelers who are reasonably active, and the views from the top make the effort worthwhile.
On the way back, you can stop at Lake Coatepeque for lunch and spend some time by the water. If you still have energy left, there are opportunities for water activities or, for groups looking for something more private, a yacht experience on the lake.
It is a very different day from surfing in El Zonte, which is precisely why it makes such a good addition to a longer stay.
Spend an evening in El Tunco
El Tunco is about 15 minutes from Villa Lety and offers a completely different nightlife experience.
Where El Zonte tends to slow down after sunset, El Tunco has more bars, music, dancing, and late-night energy. It is a fun place to spend an evening, particularly if your group wants to go out for drinks or dancing.
Kako’s and La Bonita are two places worth checking out when you want a livelier night.
Then you can come back to El Zonte and sleep.
When is the best time to visit El Zonte?
There is no single perfect month for everyone because the best time to visit depends on what you want from the trip.
If surfing is your priority, the right season will depend on your ability and the type of waves you are looking for. Beginners generally benefit from the more manageable conditions that can occur from October through April, while experienced surfers may be interested in the larger summer swells.
If your priority is simply enjoying the beach, eating well, relaxing, and exploring the country, there is something to enjoy throughout the year.
September through April is also a beautiful period for early-morning beach walks and sunrises. The mornings can feel particularly peaceful, especially before the heat of the day arrives.
The most important thing is to decide what kind of vacation you want before deciding when to come.
How many days should you spend in El Zonte?
For a first visit, we would recommend at least four or five nights.
That gives you enough time to actually settle into the rhythm of the place rather than spending your entire vacation moving around.
A week is even better.
With seven days, you can surf, take a day trip, visit the waterfalls, explore the local restaurants, have a completely lazy beach day, and still have time to do absolutely nothing—which, in our opinion, is an important part of being on vacation.
If you are traveling with a group or family, a week also gives everyone room to do different things. Some people can surf in the morning while others sleep in, someone can arrange a massage, another person can take a coffee tour, and everyone can meet back up for dinner.
That flexibility is one of the great advantages of staying in a private villa rather than trying to make every person follow the same schedule.
What is it like to stay at Villa Lety?
Villa Lety sits directly on the beach in El Zonte, which means the ocean is not something you have to plan an excursion around.
It is simply there.
But for us, the location is only part of the experience. What really matters is making a stay feel easy.
At Villa Lety, chef service is available from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at no additional cost, along with grocery pickup, housekeeping, concierge assistance, massage, airport transportation, private drivers, and laundry. Softboard rentals and surf lessons can also be arranged.
The philosophy is simple: if you ask, there is a good chance we will figure out how to help.
That might mean arranging transportation, finding something you forgot to pack, organizing a day trip, helping you get into the water, or simply knowing which restaurant makes sense for dinner that night.
For a couple traveling for a few days, that kind of service is convenient.
For a family or a large group, it can completely change the experience.
Instead of spending your vacation coordinating groceries, meals, drivers, activities, laundry, and reservations, you can actually spend your time together.
Who is El Zonte best for?
El Zonte works particularly well for travelers who want more than a traditional beach resort.
It is an excellent destination for surfers, obviously, but you do not need to surf to enjoy it. Families can spend the mornings at the beach and afternoons by the pool. Couples can build their days around food, sunsets, and wellness. Groups can combine adventure, surfing, relaxation, and long dinners without needing to leave the area every day.
It is also a particularly good place for people who enjoy having options.
You can have a completely unstructured day, or you can fill every hour with something memorable.
You can eat at a casual burger spot or dress up for dinner. You can spend the morning surfing and the afternoon getting a massage, or you can simply sit by the ocean with a book.
El Zonte does not demand a particular kind of traveler.
It gives you room to create your own version of the trip.
A few things worth knowing before you come
El Zonte is still a relatively small coastal community, and that is part of its appeal.
Bring sunscreen, comfortable clothes, shoes that can handle uneven ground, and something appropriate for the water. If you surf, you will want to bring or arrange the equipment that suits your level. If you are planning hikes or waterfalls, proper footwear is worth having.
Most importantly, leave some room in your itinerary.
The best parts of El Zonte are not always the things you schedule in advance. They might be the sunrise you decide to watch from the beach, the breakfast that turns into a two-hour conversation, the unexpected surf session, or the afternoon when everyone agrees that nobody needs to go anywhere.
Why El Zonte stays with you
There are plenty of beautiful beaches in the world.
What makes El Zonte memorable is the combination of things: the surf, the volcanic sand, the mountains, the food, the people, the small-town atmosphere, and the feeling that you can still find your own rhythm here.
You can come for the waves and discover that you love the mornings.
You can come for the adventure and discover that your favorite day was the one where you did almost nothing.
You can come expecting a surf trip and leave already thinking about when you can come back with your family.
That is El Zonte.
It is a place where the Pacific sets the pace, where a good day does not need to be complicated, and where there is always another wave, another restaurant, another sunrise, or another stretch of coastline waiting just around the corner.
And once you have experienced it that way, it becomes very easy to understand why people return.
